Topic 13: CYBERLANGUAGE

Definition of cyber language or 'internet slang' from this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_slang

refers to a variety of everyday languages used by different communities on the Internet. It is difficult to provide a standardized definition of Internet slang due to the constant changes made to its nature.[1] However, it can be understood to be a type of slang that Internet users have popularized, and in many cases, have coined. Such terms often originate with the purpose of saving keystrokes. Many people use the same abbreviations in texting and instant messaging, and social networking websites.

Definition from the slides

  • is a language of the Net
  • a term, not yet recorded in traditional dictionaries, is encountered by majority of people daily in media and regularly in workplace.

Topic 11: The World Is Obsessed With Facebook

Topic 11: INFORMATION SHARING

Social Networking

What is social networking? It is defined as an association of people drawn together by family, work or hobby. Social networking websites allow users to be part of a virtual community. The two most popular sites are currently Facebook and MySpace. These websites provide users with simple tools to create a custom profile with text and pictures. Another examples of social networking sites is Twitter, Tagged and Friendster.

ADVANTAGES:

  1. Easy to stay in touch
  2. Builds credibility
  3. Connections and meet new friends
  4. Low costs

Social network does help people stay in touch with their beloved ones. Thus, it will mathematically reduce cost as it is available for free. People don't have to pay for their accounts but they just have to create account using their own e-mail. Besides, it's a kind of medium where people tend to express themselves in public. So it will builds their credibility and get respect from people around them. For people who love to meet a new friends and exchange hobbies, social network seems a better place for them as they will meet people from all over the world.

Social networking is a sites for those who want to stay in touch with their family and friends,  those who would relish the opportunity of meeting new friends and those who want to start build their credibility

However....watch out for the...

DISADVANTAGES!!!

  1. Lack of anonymity
  2. Online scams
  3. Time consuming

You are putting your name, location, gender, age and other information on the internet that you don´t necessarily want other people to know about. As long as people can know who you exactly are, then some can find ways to do you harm. Online scams and other cases of harassment is normal on the internet. Many social networking sites apply certain measures to keep these at an absolute minimum. You need to be careful. Social networking is really time consuming. If it is not your thing it may just be a waste of time.

Sample of cases that happen involving Facebook

SO FROM NOW ON, PLEASE USE FACEBOOK IN A SMART WAY!

Scenario

Dean is one of facebook users. He is from Sunderland, in the south London. He used to support his childhood team, Sunderland when it comes to soccer. One day, Sunderland lost to West Ham United in a premier league match. Dean is mad with the match result. So after went home, he used his facebook account to express his anger. But, he started make chaos after he used several racial comments pointed to one of the West Ham's player. What is the effect of his comment toward society?

This scenario actually has already happen a lot. People used racial issues in social networking. It is a shame to the world as human is judge by the skin colour. Social network should be used for good purpose, not the bad ones. I am afraid as we know this kind of incident will cause chaos among communities. Its a big problem to the world as it can lead us to war. This is the bad examples of social networking.

Topic 7 : ONLINE COMMUNICATION

Synchronous and asynchronous communication

Synchronous communication is one that occurs in real time independent of location such as chat, instant messaging or video conference. Synchronous communication may be done simply through text exchange or include an audio and video component. In synchronous communication, all participants are present at the same time although they do not necessarily have to be in the same location. There are many advantages to synchronous interactions. It encourages more cooperation, supports decision making in a group setting, allows for immediate feedback and sets a more fluid pace in discussions. Asynchronous communication is the method that is commonly used for PC communication and email application, internet access and PC to PC.

Scenario

Linda are working for telecommunication agency that need her to talk with customer at a customer service department. She used to have phone conversation, e-mail to e-mail everyday. One day he got a complaint e-mail from customer. Linda want to give immediate responds. However, the customer didn't put any number for Linda to call. So, Linda are having difficulty to give her feedback to that customer as she felt phone to phone conversation is more clear rather than by sending e-mail for explanation. What kind of communication that Linda preferred?
